The length and breadth of the Maths4DL programme allows sustained engagement with industrial partners ensuring maximum impact of the work, and also an effective process of knowledge exchange. It also gives us the time and resource to seek, and engage with industrial and other collaborators beyond the original external partners. This leads to new developments, and also to be effective in anticipating future industrial need.
Our industrial partners are fully engaged with the work packages, and offer problem challenges, domain expertise and experience for all members of the team.
Over the past two decades, industrial researchers at BT have had many fruitful collaborations with Bath mathematicians. My current project with Maths4DL PhD student Ahmed Rashwan focuses on reducing energy use in communication systems, including radio systems and back-end servers. Current AI techniques are particularly energy-intensive, but the upcoming 6G standards aim to address this through features collectively referred to as green radio. Ahmed’s project uses mathematical modelling to develop network management algorithms which minimize energy consumption while maintaining service quality. This involves solving optimization problems, such as minimizing energy use in network segments while ensuring a specified minimum service level for all users. Data science plays a crucial role by providing insights into potential energy savings based on current network measurements.
In the Atmospheric Processes and Parametrizations team at the Met Office, we have been collaborating with members of the Maths4DL team for over 3 years. Met Office staff have co-supervised MSc projects in the summers of 2022, 2023 and 2024. Not only has this provided exciting topical projects for the students at Bath, it has provided useful mentoring and supervision experience for Met Office staff as part of their continued professional development. Beyond MSc supervision, we have had a couple of successful collaborative events. Met Office staff pitched a scientific problem which was investigated during a hackathon in Bath. The project was about variations in wind speed with height near the land surface. Early results were encouraging and led to continued investigation in this area at the Met Office. A second event, in Exeter, was a training course focussed on deploying machine learning algorithms within our climate model. The expertise from the Maths4DL team in the delivery of the tutorials and the subsequent discussions was extremely valuable. We are looking forward to continuing to work with Maths4DL.
The Alan Turing Institute is the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, with headquarters at the British Library. It was created as the national institute for data science in 2015. In 2017, as a result of a government recommendation, we added artificial intelligence to our remit. The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954), whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing are considered to be the key disciplines comprising the fields of data science and artificial intelligence.
Right across the world, every single day, people make decisions based on the weather. We provide weather and climate forecasts to help with those decisions so people can be safe, well and prosperous. Everything we do is based on world-leading science and enhanced by the close working relationships we have with partner organisations around the globe. We collect and make sense of massive amounts of data every day, using cutting-edge technology for the benefit of mankind - and our planet.
The Met Office Hadley Centre is one of the UK's foremost climate change research centres. Since our foundation in 1990, the Met Office Hadley Centre has been recognised as a global partner of choice for climate science and services. Our scientists have worked with international researchers from over 1,700 institutions across 138 countries.
As a leading global medical technology, pharmaceutical diagnostics, and digital solutions innovator, GE Healthcare enables clinicians to make faster, more informed decisions through intelligent devices, data analytics, applications and services, supported by its Edison intelligence platform. We are committed to fostering an inclusive culture of respect, transparency, and unyielding integrity.
Adaptix is transforming radiology by bringing to market an addressable Flat Panel X-ray Source (FPS) with a multitude of individually addressable emitters with integrated power supply (known as a ‘monoblock’) – essentially we are ‘digitizing’ the source to complete the digitization of the imaging system. Our patent-protected technology enables fast 3D imaging from a stationary source at a significantly lower dose than CT. The FPS is designed to allow 3D image formation by means of Digital Tomosynthesis using existing generations of Detectors and Workstations, allowing a system price point similar to that of current 2D systems. Adaptix was founded by experts in radiation production, medical devices and bringing technology out of the lab and into the clinic. Our team includes hardware, software, business, project and product leaders backed by internationally recognised experts
We are the UK’s leading Insurance, Wealth and Retirement business. Our purpose is to be with you today, for a better tomorrow.
We’re one of the world’s leading communications services companies. The solutions we sell are integral to modern life. Our purpose is as simple as it is ambitious: we connect for good. There are no limits to what people can do when they connect. And as technology changes our world, connections are becoming even more important to everyday life. Today, that’s truer than ever. The connections we make are helping solve the world’s biggest challenges such as the global pandemic, climate change and cyber security. Through the power of technology, we’re supporting customers to live, work and play together better. We connect for good.
We are a science-based company providing solutions for innovation. We draw on various branches of science – mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, geology – to break down silos of knowledge and find the most innovative, sustainable solutions for the future. For 30 years, we’ve led the global field in multidisciplinary, multiscale solutions.
We are a global biopharma company with a purpose to unite science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together. We aim to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people over the next 10 years. Our bold ambitions for patients are reflected in new commitments to growth and a step-change in performance. We are a company where outstanding people can thrive.
At Microsoft Research, we accelerate scientific discovery and technology innovation to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. We do this by bringing together the best minds across diverse disciplines and backgrounds to take on the most pressing research challenges for Microsoft and for society.
We’re optimistic for a future where people live healthier, fairer, more informed, more sustainable lives. We see a world where our AI technology brings us into a new era of democratised intelligence that everyone can benefit from. Our IPU lets innovators create the next breakthroughs in machine intelligence to enhance human potential.
NHSX aims to create the most advanced health and care service in the world to diagnose diseases earlier, free up staff time and empower patients to take greater control of their own healthcare.
